Image: Froch's mystery opponent to be revealed on August 28th, the same day that tickets go on saleBy Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is going to wait until August 28th for his fighter IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) to reveal who his next opponent will be for his November 17th date in Nottingham, UK, which is the same day that tickets will go on sale for the fight.

Froch was supposed to spill the beans today in an announcement to Sky Sports News, but instead the word is that there’s still a problem getting an opponent for Froch to fight.

They could have gotten unbeaten super middleweight contender Thomas Oosthuizen, but that fight fell apart over a number of reasons one of them being that the money wasn’t right.

Now it’s anyone’s guess who the opponent will be. If the rumors that have been circulating around or true then Froch will be facing Jean Pascal’s older brother Nicholson Poulard (19-3, 9 KO’s), a light heavyweight. For a lot of boxing fans that would seem like an illogical move on Froch’s part, because Poulard isn’t well known outside of Canada and doesn’t have a huge fan base to where Froch will get anything from fighting him other than a payday fight. I mean, it’s not a fight where it’ll attract a lot of attention because Poulard has never beaten anyone of note, and he took a loss in his most important fight of his career agaisnt Sebastian Demers.

Hopefully, Froch and Hearn do the right thing and select Sakio Bika or Rowland Bryant. At this point, I’d even be happy if Froch fought someone like George Groves or James DeGale, although I know that would never happen in a million years. Those guys are still being matched against softer opposition and to throw them in with Froch might not be a good idea.

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why Froch won’t be facing a really good opponent for his next fight is that he’s got an important rematch coming up next March against former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, as well as a possible rematch against former Froch conqueror Mikkel Kessler. Those fights will bring in big bank, and it’s likely that Hearn won’t want to risk Froch getting beaten by the likes of Bika or Bryant before those nice money fights take place.

It’s too bad because the November 17th date would have been perfect for Froch to build up for next years’ important fights by taking on someone that boxing fans really want to see him fight. Bika would be a beautiful opponent for Froch, because it would be interesting to see how Froch deals with a guy that gave both Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward so much trouble. Although both guys beat Bika, as did Bute, it wasn’t easy. I could see Bika beating Froch in front of his own British fans in Nottingham, but I guess that’s perhaps why Bika won’t get selected for this fight. He’s too dangerous for Froch.
