Image: Charr vs. Klitschko: One of them may get Haye in 2013By Jason Kim: Unbeaten Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 kO’s) has been out front about his desire to face former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye in 2013 if Charr can get past WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 40 KO’s) on September 8th in Moscow, Russia. Vitali, too, is somewhat interested in taking on Haye next year, but his situation is a little more murky.

Vitali is running for a parliament seat in the October elections in Ukraine and he’s already said that he may choose to retire from boxing if he wins that seat. He’s got a good chance of getting that position that he desires, and that means that he’ll have to make a big decision about whether to retire or not.

The money that Vitali would make in a Haye fight would be huge, and it would be the perfect fight for Vitali to end his career on. However, Haye is a dangerous opponents because he really moves well, hits hard and he’s difficult to beat when facing slow fighters like Vitali. Wladimir Klitschko did remarkably well in beating Haye last year in July, but Wladimir’s a lot more athletic than Vitali with faster hands and better power.

Haye couldn’t get away with much against Wladimir, because he kept nailing him with jabs and straight hands. Vitali’s jab isn’t that great and his right hands are a lot slower. Haye would have a great chance of countering Vitali if he tries to land his rights.

Under normal circumstances a limited fighter like Charr would have no chances of beating a guy like Vitali, but you can’t say what’s going to happen now, not after Vitali struggled so badly in his last fight against the equally slow Dereck Chisora last February. Vitali was badly out of breath in that fight and made to look like an aging fighter. Charr hits about as hard as Chisora, but he’s not as good of a pressure fighter as him. If Charr can try and emulate what Chisora did against Vitali, we could see a possible upset in this fight.

Charr wants the victory badly so he can move on to a Haye fight. He already showed up at the post fight press conference for Haye’s last fight against Chisora and promptly called Haye out. Haye humored Charr, speaking to him as if he was talking to a dreamer. But Charr could in theory shock the world and beat Vitali. Stranger things have happened to be sure, but it’s still not likely to to happen unless Vitali really ages rapidly overnight.
