Image: Burns-Mitchell: Bigtime boxing back in ScotlandBy Steven Ocallaghan: On September 22nd September, big time boxing comes back to Glasgow. WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns defending his title against the talented Kevin Mitchell. I’m a fan of both these guys and think Mitchell thoroughly deserves his shot against the hard working Scot.

Mitchell has picked himself up well after the sore loss to Michael Katsidis, coming back with an 8th round stoppage of John Murray in what was arguably the best fight of last year.

Burns, after a tremendous win against the previously unbeaten Roman “Rocky” Martinez to win the WBO super featherweight title , then a couple of easier defences against Andreas Everson and Joseph Laryea, leaving aside the Nicky Cook fight moved up in weight to fight Michael Katsidis for the interim lightweight belt.

You could see the difference in not having to cut so much weight that he easily outpointed the dangerous if not slightly faded Aussie.

After Juan Manuel Marquez moved up in weight , Burns then held the full title and first defence was against dangerous puncher and previous World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champ Paulus Moses, again comfortably outscoring the African.

For me, I think Burns might be just a wee bit too big and strong for Mitchell and see Burns winning a fairly tight contest by 2 or 3 rounds.

Whoever wins it will be a great matchup with more big fights round the corner. One name mentioned is the talented Adrien Broner. A Floyd Mayweather type of fighter with a lot of talent, but hasn’t really fought many of the top Guys.

The one big name in Daniel Ponce de Lion gave him a tough fight which many thought Ponce De Leon won but either way a winner in the Burns v Mitchell fight against Broner would be one worth watching
