Image: Anthony Joshua needs to improve on his defence and timing if he’s to stand any chance of Olympic GloryBy Dominic Sauboorah: It is without a doubt that British Olympic super heavyweight Anthony Joshua is an exceptional talent with a very professional stance and clear punching power. He’s only been boxing for 4 years but ever since he won silver at the world championships in Azerbaijan he has then been considered one for the future.

Nevertheless in his first Olympic fight against Erislandy Savon on Wednesday in London, Joshua clearly showed that he needs to work on his defence and timing.

Personally I thought Savon won the fight by about 3 points, due to the fact that he kept countering Joshua, using the ring well, boxing brilliantly on the back foot and landing some thudding shots. Joshua definitely had his successes though as he was able to connect with some really heavy hooks to Savon’s chin.

Overall, based on the boxing ability and ring generalship, I thought Anthony Joshua lost and after the final bell sounded he did look rather deflated. I’m over the moon the Joshua came through a very difficult affair, however he will need to right his wrongs in his next fight.

Joshua is without a doubt one to watch out for, but if he doesn’t improve on his defence and timing he could find himself being out boxed by even more opponents, which is a shame, considering he’s a huge prospect with tremendous talent.
