Image: Amir Khan’s missing jigsaw pieceBy Asif Azam: There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Amir Khan’s career since his humiliating defeat to Danny Garcia. First of all Khan should not retire as he did not get out-boxed or out muscled against Garcia. Basically, Khan was clumsy and got caught flush.

So what can be Khan’s missing link? Yes, you guessed it’s the one and only Ariza. With a record of 5-0 Khan is UNDEFEATED under Ariza. Everyone knows Lamont Peterson cheated against Khan but it was Ariza conditioning that enabled Khan to go twelve rounds with a boxer who was taking testosterone; it was Ariza conditioning that enabled Khan to survive the tenth round against Marcos Maidana. If Khan was conditioned under Ariza he would have stayed on his feet in round 3 against Garcia, he would have got his legs back.

The statement “Looking in shape, is different then being in Condition”. Completely reflects Khan training camp. Only Khan knows how good conditioned he was because Ariza killed Amir in training making his legs go jelly by not weight training but his training regime used by the great Pacquiao, plyometrics, post jog sit ups, core exercises. From Amir Khans training camp it only looked like Khan’s tactics was to get power and get a beach body.

Khan’s weight on fight night was 148 where Garcia was 150, if Khan was to be best at light welter he needs to come in heavier at 156, Floyd Mayweather Jnr fights at 160 at welterweight.

Khan’s tactics on fight night were fine, he out boxed Garcia in rounds 1 and 2, He used that sharp razor jab but Khan’s achilles heel is the over right and left hands. He got caught by Maidana 3 times and Garcia 3 times. When Khan got hurt he did not hold on or spoil maybe Khan’s ego has got the better of him? Balance of Khan is another issue, Khan tends to lunge in he needs to learn to stand up straight and find openings with his jab and footwork.

Finally does Khan need a change of trainer? Possibly yes, but this new trainer will need to incorporate the extensive pad work Khan does with Freddy roach and add the defensive skills, and work on his balance. Only trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr comes to mind that has necessary defensive output and the right ring craftsmanship to pass on to Khan at this stage of his career. With Ariza besides Khan he will be unbeatable at any weight and will stay on his feet.
