Golden Boy and Top Rank existing like different boxing leagues

By Chris Williams: It’s pretty sad how the two biggest promotional boxing companies Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions has taken the sport into almost two different boxing leagues with the fighters of each league mainly competing against fighters from their own club/league. It reminds me of the American Football League (AFL) that ran separate from the NFL from 1960 to 1969.

Why Top Rank and Golden Boy can iron out their differences to have regular fights between their two promotional company fighters is really beyond me. But I think it’s really bad for the sport of boxing and for this to happen. If you’re mostly going to just pit your fighter against guys from your promotional team it decreases the amount of interesting fights that can be made causing a lot of mismatches and/or repeat fights for lack of new opponents.

Since it doesn’t look like Golden Boy and Top Rank are going to be able to come together anytime soon to start having fights take place between the two companies, I think there needs to be a boxing commission that steps in and forces the issue. If this is going to be professional boxing and not some kind of amateur league in the United States, then a commission needs to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen because it’s really hurting the sport.

This is why we have sports like MMA in the UFC catching on so quickly in the U.S, because they put on the best fights with stacked cards. You don’t get that in the U.S because the biggest promoters aren’t matching their fighters from the other big promoters.
