Image: Mikey Garcia vs. Celestino Caballero on July 28thBy Dan Ambrose: On July 28th, WBA featherweight champion Celestino Caballero (36-4, 23 KO’s) will be defending his title against highly hyped but still largely untested Miguel “Mikey” Garcia (28-0, 24 KO’s) in a fight at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California.

#1 WBA, #1 WBO, #2 WBC, 24-year-old Garcia is a good fighter, but he’s not looked super sensational in the fights that I’ve seen of him. Garcia is highly respected from a lot of hardcore boxing fans, but there are a number of fans who see him as a low punch volume fighter who fights very stiff without much of a left hand, and who has a bad habit of admiring his work after he lands a hard shot.

It’s almost as if Garcia expects all of his opponents to keel over each time he lands a hard right hand, because he stand there just looking at them instead of firing back with additional shots. Garcia has been matched too softly during his career and that’s led to him getting too many easy knockouts. The wins seem to have taken away from Garcia’s game because he loads up with everything, only throws single shots, and fights like the tin man from the Wizard of Oz. He’s incredibly stiff in his joints and lacks speed and flexibility.

I see Caballero as a much better fighter with his good power and his ability to throw nonstop punches from many different angles. He’s not someone that just goes looking for one big shot like Garcia appears to do. Caballero will throw a ton of shots and wear his opponents down. Caballero has beaten Satoshi Hosono and Jonathan Barrios in his last two fights.

Garcia defeated Bernabe Concepcion by a 7th round TKO in his last fight in March of this year. Concepcion night have had a chance in that fight had he let his hands go more.
