Is Mayweather Chicken?

Image: Is Mayweather Chicken?By Carlos Rosa: As Floyd Mayweather goes into jail today June 1,2012 to start his 87 days in solitary confinement, there is a question that still lingers over the boxing community, will Mayweather finally fight Manny Pacquiao when he is released from jail?

I’m not quite sure I know the answer to that but first we must examine what appears to go unnoticed and are some of the reasons why it May or May not happen, no pun intended.

First, why has the fight taken so long to make is Mayweather chicken? Is he afraid of the Pacman? Well lets observe these facts, Mayweather has been know to brag and boast about being “His Own Boss” but prior to the Pacquiao – Marquez 3, when asked about fighting Pacquiao, Mayweather would often dance around the question as he is also known to do in the ring and say He doesn’t make the fights, whoever they put in his way he will fight. But Who is they? Doesn’t that sound like a contradiction for the Man who is supposedly his “Own Boss” for a man who picks who he chooses to fight?

Secondly, the whole steroid thing which he is currently being sued by Manny Pacquiao for defamation of character, Is Mayweather chicken? After it has recently came to light that two top boxing superstars Lamont Peterson then Andre Berto where found to have used steroids it doesn’t seem as absurd as it once did to have Pacquiao get Olympic style testing. After all Mayweather has a good point in which he claims that’s its fishy for a boxer to move up 8 weight classes in his career. That’s is reasonable doubt. But lets look at it in an other way. If Pacquiao is on steroids then Mayeather doesn’t want to fight him because quite naturally he could get himself hurt. So in floyd eyes it must look like Pacquaio can hurt him if he’s claiming steroid use. If Pacquaio is not on “the Juice” then would that make Mayweather look a tad bit chicken? In Mayweather eyes Pacquaio must look so good and so strong that he can not believe that it could possibly be done without the use of steroids.

Third, For not agreeing to the 45-45 split with the winner getting the rest. If he is so sure that he can beat Pacquaio then it should be a no brainer. But does he believe he can beat Pacquiao? Is he such in doubt that he wants a guaranteed bigger purse? Is Mayweather Chicken? He wants his purse to be so much bigger then Pacquiaos so that in the event of a lost he can claim he got more money, after all they do call him “Money” Mayweather for a reason. He is arguably the greatest business man that boxing has ever seen. A lot will undoubtedly send him into retirement a extremely wealthy man. But what is more important to Floyd his legacy in the sport, and going down as one of the greatest boxers of all time. In being one of the few fighters to retire undefeated and without taking much punishment. Or is he more interested in milking this business for all its worth at the expense of the Mega Fight NEVER taking place.

Fourth, and final opinion I’m going to play Devils advocate because even though it may seem like this article is bashing Mayweather; I actually believe that he is an all time great and I choose him to beat Pacquiao if they were to ever meet. But why the sudden urgency for Floyd to all of a sudden call out Manny after what seemed to be a decade of ducking him and beating around the bush. Could Mayweather be ready to retire and wants the Mega Pay day before he exit’s the sport? Could he have been waiting for Pacquiao to lose a step so he can enter the ring with the 100% certainty that he will win as he does for all of his fights? Could Pacquiao almost losing to Marquez put the sense of urgency into Mayweather, with him realizing that if Pacquiao loses the Big Payday and Mega fight would likely go out the window with it, so he has to jump on the opportunity before its too late. There are many factors and debatable opinions that go into the making of this fight. I hope that this jail stay and extra time to think will further urge Mayweather into making this fight a reality. If they never fight it will forever hang in the balance of there legacy…
