Cotto can’t afford to just sit and wait for a big fight to fall into his lap

Image: Cotto can't afford to just sit and wait for a big fight to fall into his lapBy Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) just got beat yet again in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and he’s really lucky that Mayweather Jr. decided to fight his fight by slugging with him. Had Mayweather chosen to box him for 12 rounds, Cotto would have looked pretty silly in there and would likely lost even worse than Juan Manuel Marquez did in his defeat.

Cotto doesn’t have a fight scheduled for his next bout, and he might as well forget about getting a rematch with Mayweather because that’s not going to happen. Cotto had his chance against Mayweather, and his talent wasn’t good enough to beat the best fighter in the sport.

Cotto really isn’t in the position to pick and choose which fights he wants, because none of the big names are looking in his direction for their next fights. Manny Pacquiao, who aready whipped Cotto in 2009, will either fight a rematch against Tim Bradley or face Juan Manuel Marquez in November. Who knows what opponent Mayweather will choose, but you can be sure that it won’t be Cotto. He’s been there and done that, and it’s pointless for him to go over old ground to whip Cotto again.

Like I said in another article, I think Cotto needs to make a play for a fight against Bradley. He’s perfect for Cotto because he can’t punch and he likes to fight in close. That’s a style that suits Cotto because he’s got short arms and he does well against inside fighters.

Cotto can also forget about getting the winner of the Saul Alvarez vs. Victor Ortiz fight which takes place on September 15th. Alvarez will probably win that fight, and he’s made it very clear that he wants to fight Mayweather next and he may get his prayers answered.

If I were Cotto’s promoter, I’d light a fire underneath his backside to get him motivated enough to take on some of the more beatable opponents in the second tier. He needs to stay busy and the top tier fighters are too dangerous for Cotto now at this point in his career.
