Image: Haye picks Froch to defeat ButeBy Scott Gilfoid: David Haye, a very close friend of Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s), is picking him to pull off a huge upset over the talented IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (30-0, 24 KO’s) this Saturday night in Froch’s home city of Nottingham. Haye thinks Froch’s pressure will get to Bute and give the victory.

Haye said to Sportingnews.com “He [Froch] can take Bute to a dark place and overwhelm him on Saturday night. I see him doing something similar to what Ricky Hatton did against Kostya Tszyu in 2005.”

I’m not sure i like Haye’s description of Froch taking Bute to a dark place. Anyway, moving right a long. So basically Haye sees Froch wrestling with Bute on the inside and fouling him from time to time to keep Bute from getting off his punches. The Hatton-Tszyu fight was god awful to watch, because it looked like an MMA fighter holding a boxer up against the ropes to keep him from doing anything. I think Hatton wold have lost major points had that fight not taken place in the UK, because prolonged wrestling doesn’t fly in the United States. They’d have given Hatton warnings and then taken points off. I hate to say it but without Hatton keeping Tszyu pinned up against the ropes all night in their fight, Tszyu would have won that fight likely by knockout.

No, I don’t see Froch being able to wrestle Bute up against the ropes and hold him there. Bute is too good at moving from side to side, and he’s not as old as Tszyu was when he fought Hatton. Bute also didn’t have to cut a ton of weight for this fight like Tszyu did in the Hatton fight.

Haye continues “I have every faith in Carl and believe he can outwork the champion over the course of 12 rounds.”

I don’t like the way that sounds. When a person describes things the way that Haye did right there, it makes me think there’s a lot of doubt there. It sounds to me like Haye is doing a lot of hoping that Froch will win, but he may be thinking he’s going to get royally spanked. Oh well, it happens. At least Froch can give the excuse afterwards that he got beat by a champion instead of a non-champion. The fight has that aspect to it. It would be much different if Froch fought one of the contenders like Adonis Stevenson and got knocked cold. It would be more of a big deal big Stevenson isn’t a champion.
