Image: Broner looking to show his talent against EscobedoBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) will be making his second defense of his World Boxing Organization title on July 21st against No.1 contender Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO’s) in Broner’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

This is going be another easy fight for the 22-year-old Broner. Escobedo doesn’t have the skills to last long in this fight, and I think he’ll just be a punching bag for Broner to showcase his immense skills against. Broner will have to carry Escobedo if he wants to make the fight last any length of time, because the differences in talent between the two fighters is too huge.

Broner was supposed to be cleaning up on 2nd tier fighter Gary Sykes this weekend at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, but that fight was cancelled with Lamont Peterson’s positive test in a drug test. Peterson vs. Amir Khan was going to be the main event for the card, but after the fight was cancelled, Golden Boy decided to cancel the entire card because their chances of finding a replacement opponent was slim and none before then.

Escobedo is going to be in for a world of hurt against Broner, and I’ll be surprised if he makes it to the 5th round. Escobedo, 30, has already been beaten by Michael Katsidis, Robert Guerrero and Daniel Jimenez. The last defeat was against Guerrero in November 2010. After that defeat, Escobedo went soft, beating Water Estrada, Rocky Juarez, Lonnie Smith and Juan Ruiz to get the number #1 ranking. It’s pretty laughable that Escobedo has been given a number 1 ranking with wins over those guys. He should have at least had to fight Diego Magdaleno or Juan Carlos Burgos for him to get a shot at the title. Oh well, if the WBO wants to rank Escobedo high off of these empty wins then they’re going to see him get embarrassed when he’s shown to be out of his class against the ultra-talented Broner on July 21st.
