Image: Alvarez has a big future ahead of him; needs Cotto first before MayweatherBy Dallan O’Donnell: After his big win against modern day legend Sugar Shane Mosley on the undercard of Mayweather-Cotto on Saturday night in Vegas unbeaten Saul Alvarez has his pick of opponents from now on. He has said that he wants a mega fight with Floyd Mayweather next and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya thinks he is ready but I disagree.

Alvarez is 21 years old. Why rush? He is a very good fighter and will probably be a multiple times champion of the world when he grows up but just hold off on the Mayweather fight. My advice for the Mexican, nicknamed Canelo because of his ginger hair, is to fight the man Mayweather beat on Saturday Miguel Cotto.

Cotto is still going to be a huge draw because of his popularity and it would really be an acid test, not just for Alvarez but for Cotto too. Cotto is experienced at world level, whilst really Alvarez is still learning despite actually having more fights than Cotto! It would be another chance for Canelo to cement his place as one of the best in the world and also cement him as a big PPV star.

It would also prove to be a chance at redemption for the former WBA super- welterweight champ Cotto. He could immediately bounce back after that thrilling and close fight against Mayweather. Cotto however possibly won’t take that much of a risk. He will possibly take on a second tier fighter to comeback but I think he is good enough to beat Alvarez.

For both men if they were to fight a match up with Mayweather would then seem like a good idea afterwards. Cotto would relish a rematch as he thought the Judges’ scorecards were wrong. A match up with Mayweather would mean a lot for the hungry Mexican also. He could instantly become even more of a super star than he already is.
