Khan’s promoter still sees him getting Mayweather fight next year

Image: Khan's promoter still sees him getting Mayweather fight next yearBy William Mackay: It doesn’t matter that Amir Khan fouled and ran all night long against Lamont Peterson in an off-putting performance in losing his IBF and WBA light welterweight titles last December, Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer still sees Khan getting a mega payday fight against unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year after Khan has gotten past Peterson in their rematch next month and taken at least one fight at 147 before the Mayweather bout.

Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, told the Dailystar.co.uk “Assuming all goes well and he [Khan] wins against Peterson, he then moves up to welterweight. But I am not so sure if the first fight will be against Floyd, because of the weight. It may not be the smartest thing to do…I’d like Amir to have one fight at that weight before fighting Mayweather.”

There’s a couple of things getting in the way of Schaefer’s vision. First of all, Khan may lose to Peterson in the rematch, especially if Khan doesn’t foul and run like he did last time. There’s a very real possibility that Khan will lose to Peterson if he’s not fouling. If he’s fouling and the referee just lets him, then he has a much better chance at getting the win over Peterson, but it’ll likely be a tainted win and a real turn off for Mayweather.

As it is, Mayweather Jr. already said he doesn’t like Khan’s fighting style, saying that he runs too much and that he should have been disqualified in his last fight against Peterson. Mayweather obviously is talking about all the shoving and pulling down on Peterson’s head that Khan was doing in that fight. When Khan wasn’t using those fouls, he was running all around the ring.

Mayweather said he doesn’t like the Khan fights, and that’s pretty much an indication that the fight won’t happen unless Khan changes his fighting style. I can’t see that happening. He couldn’t even stop shoving when docked points on two occasions in his last fight against Peterson. I think the running and fouling are so ingrained in Khan’s style of fighting that he can’t stop even if he said he wanted to. As such, even if he does beat Peterson in a rematch, he’ll likely be ignored by Mayweather no matter what Khan does after he moves up in weight.

He sets it up to where only he’s the one that can punch by running, shoving and pulling down on his opponents’ head. A referee is supposed to be policing those kinds of fouls, but thus far I’ve only seen one referee try to put a clamp on Khan’s fouling in his last fight, and even that didn’t seem to stop Khan from continuing to shove.

I’d like to think that the next referee that works the Khan-Peterson II rematch will try to keep Khan from fouling, but I doubt it seriously. As such, Khan may get the win over Peterson, but like I said, it will likely be a tainted with because of the fouling and Mayweather won’t be interested.
