Image: Froch vs. Bute may be televised by EPIX in the U.SBy William Mackay: The May 26th fight between former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) and IBF super middleweight Lucian Bute (30-0, 24 KO’s) may be shown on EPIX in the United States. If this happens it would be great, because neither SHOWTIME or HBO will be televising the bout having passed on the idea.

At the EPIX twitter page, it said “Fight fans! Froch vs. Bute is coming to EPIX Sports, Saturday, May 26th.”

This would be excellent if EPIX does show it because it’s an interesting fight between two really good super middleweights in the division. Froch may have been beaten by WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward last December in the Super Six tournament finals, but Froch still remains among the top fighters in the division. He just didn’t have the tools to deal with Ward’s hand speed, counter punching ability and inside fighting skills. Froch was out of his class in this fight and is was painfully obvious even early on in the fight.

Depending on who you talk to, Bute is either #1 or #2 in the super middleweight division, just behind or ahead of Ward. Bute’s problem is that he’s picked up most of his wins against mediocre opposition and hasn’t until now gone after a really good fighter. In addition, Bute’s win over Librado Andrade in their first fight was highly questionable given the delayed count that the referee made when Bute was knocked to the canvas and was badly hurt in the 12th round of there fight.

Bute has a lot of proving to do in this fight to show that he’s as good as lot of boxing fans think he is. If he fails, fans will figure they were right all this time in seeing him as a paper champion who dined on weak opposition to hold into his IBF title for so long. If Bute wins, it’s still not that big of a deal because Froch is coming off of a one-sided loss to Ward. A blue print was created by Ward in that fight in how to beat Froch.
