Image: Cotto: My trainer has the perfect plan to beat MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Pedro Diaz supposedly has the most perfect ingenious plan to defeat unbeaten challenger Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) on May 5th next month. Cotto says he’s got the plan to hand Mayweather his first defeat of his career.

Cotto said this to RingTV “I know his [Mayweather] style and his game and what he is capable to do for the win, but my trainer Pedro Diaz has the perfect game plan to defeat Floyd.”

I hope Cotto isn’t checking his brains in at the door when he comes to the gym each day because he’s going to need to be able to think for himself in order to beat Mayweather. It scares me when I hear fighters or people in general putting too much confidence in others when it comes to their own fate and safety. I don’t see Diaz shaking loose an idea that hasn’t already been tried before by Mayweather’s past opposition or something that Cotto hasn’t already tried himself in the ring.

There really isn’t a perfect plan to beat Mayweather, and if Cotto believes there is, he’s going to be going to pieces on May 5th when things suddenly don’t work out as his trainer Diaz planned it to. That’s the thing. Cotto is going into the fight with a massive amount of trust and respect for Diaz and what he’s able to come up with to beat Mayweather, but it’s probably not going to work. My guess is Diaz comes up with some tired old idea like having Cotto put a lot of pressure on Mayweather to try and overwhelm him with shots. Diaz probably won’t be crazy enough to have Cotto try and box Mayweather because that clearly won’t work and will lead to Cotto getting clowned and knocked out.

From the looks of their training camp, it appears like Cotto is being trained to move in constant circles, to pressure him constantly, to try and fight Mayweather on the inside and to work to the body. In other words, it will be the same old ideas that have been tried by other fighters and have failed miserably. Cotto needs to use his jab over and over again to be competitive in this fight. He shouldn’t waste time focusing on landing shots to Mayweather’s head because it doesn’t pay off to focus shot there. What Cotto needs to do is throw straight right hands to the body and focus completely on throwing nothing but body shots all night long. I’d forget about him trying to hit Mayweather in the head of he wants to win this fight.
