Chris’ rant

Image: Chris' rantBy Christopher Young: I am sick and tired of Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinking that he is bigger than boxing or bigger than he really is. What really grinds my gears is that the other night when Georgetown University Professor Michael Eric Dyson interviewed him and (In the past he has made this comparison) he compared himself to Dr. King, Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali.

Now for one, all three of those MEN were ridiculed, threaten, abused, and assassination attempts took place on all their lives. (Dr. King and Malcolm X both has fallen to an assassin’s bullet) The BIG difference between Mayweather and these great MEN is that they stood for the civil rights and humanity of the oppressed people. They put their lives on the line and faced persecution from the oppressors for the greater good of the people. What has Mayweather done? Oh, and Mayweather had the audacity to say or of saying that he would let President Barack Obama escort him from behind to the ring carry his championship belt. If he really has that type of juice, then more power to him. He represents three things: himself, money, and the ill-informed. This is what fuels him. Why is it that whenever Mayweather does a good deed it has to be broadcast via social media? Good deeds are supposed to be done quietly not loudly. If you broadcast what you have done then what was the real reason for it? Is it notoriety? For example, when the late great Smokin Joe Frazier past away last November, Mayweather offered to pay for Frazier’s funeral, in which itself was a noble thing. But instead of calling and asking the family to do so in private, he offered his charitable contributions through social media. Why? When Ali was going through his drama with the Supreme Court and was having financial hardship, Joe Frazier gave him money in private. The only people that were there was Ali, Frazier, and sometimes Butch Lewis. It was until later years that this information came out and it was not Mr. Frazier who released this information. For the last 2 years Mayweather has been in the news; mostly in a negative light. He has done some charitable things, but once again, he advertises his own good deeds. God has blessed this young man with talent, an extended family, and riches. Remember Mayweather, as much is given much is expected!

Now this MF (This is not a typo) thinks that all should bow to him because he is the PPV king? Let’s be truly honest here. He is very selective about the opponent he chooses. Very cunning and business like, but he is making his “PPV King” claim off the other opponent. The De la Hoya (2.44 Million PPV buys) fight Mayweather was the B side opponent. He does not put butts in seats. With Ricky Hatton (925,000 PPV Buys) he has a loyal fan base that is willing to travel overseas to watch him fight. Once again, say what you want… Mayweather was the B side fighter. In his previous three other pay-per-view appearances, Mayweather had generated totals of (375,000) Zab Judah, (365,000) Arturo Gatti and (325,000) Carlos Baldomir. Now with Juan Manuel Marquez, he barely toppled 1 million PPV buys on a Mexican holiday facing a Mexican fighter. Marquez also has a huge following. The MGM Grand was predominantly filled by mostly Mexicans and the Arena was not sold out. Only 12,009 tickets were sold. The MGM Grand can seat 16,800. Let’s not forget that FM lives in Vegas. Also, with this fake retirement in which I knew he was going to comeback. He retired when the welterweight division was at its greatest. You had a prime Cotto, prime Margarito, prime Paul Williams, prime Kermit Cintron, Manny Pacquiao, Andre Berto, Carlos Quintana, prime Shane Mosley, and Joshua Clottey. He sat back and watched everybody fight each other. Then he decides to come back at a convenient time and selects the “appropriate opponents”. Boxing moved on and we actually had some credible and great fights when he was gone. Now his claim as PPV king is incorrect. If you add both Pacquiao’s and Mayweather’s last seven PPV buys Mayweather comes up short by 250K. Here’s a list.

FM opponents and PPV #’s MP opponents and PPV #’s
Victor Ortiz 1.25M Juan Marquez 1.4M
Shane Mosley 1.4M Shane Mosley 1.3M
Juan Marquez 1M Antonio Margarito 1.15M
Ricky Hatton 925K Joshua Clottey 700K
Oscar De La Hoya 2.44M Miguel Cotto 1.25M
Carlos Baldomir 325K Ricky Hatton 915K
Zab Judah 375K Oscar De La Hoya 1.25M

1. So I don’t see why a 50-50 split wouldn’t be fair. Even if it’s the other way around, splitting the pot down the middle would be fair. Now, if Manny wants to be a stickler on who put butts in seats and who sold the most, then Manny has a leg to stand on. Every demand Mayweather has asked for Manny said ok – with some resistance. Now, Floyd says he’s not budging from his offer to Pac of $40 million. Now that is ridiculous. There is $150 million on the table with this fight and Mayweather is offering Manny 26% of the pot when he is the star attraction. Manny has gone public on the Kimmel show with winner take all. Why don’t they do this, 60-40 goes to the winner by decision and 70-30 goes to the winner by KO/TKO/RTD? Doesn’t that seem fair? And do your research, Floyd gets about 20-22 million for his fights. He collects a great deal off the PPV percentages. So don’t be fooled by this loud mouth tyrant. Like the great James Brown once said,” Just like a dull knife just ain’t cutting, talking loud and saying nothing.

Just a side note: Ali was not forced to fight anybody he did not want to. This was the claim by FM. Ali was a fighting champion who went to the challenger’s home country to fight. He never had a rematch clause in his fight as champion, and he fought the who’s who of the heavyweight division.

Also I hope for his sake that this character Mayweather portrays is just to sell tickets and not on how he truly feels and sees himself.
