Image: Mundine gushing over Chavez Jr., hoping to fight himBy Dan Ambrose: Former two time WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (43-4, 25 KO’s) is hoping to get a fight against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31 KO’s) next and is really impressed with him as a fighter. Mundine has been facing pretty much exclusively 2nd tier opposition since beating Daniel Geale in May 2009.

Mundine has picked up an additional seven wins and one loss since then and is ranked #1 by the WBA in the junior middleweight division. However, Mundine isn’t ranked at all in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies in the middleweight division, which makes it seem rather strange that he would be hoping to get picked out for a title shot by Chavez Jr. over the other more qualified contenders that the the WBC has ranked in the top 15.

Mundine told the ninemsn.com.au “It’s really up to the Chavez people who’s going to get the nod. It’s really frustrating not knowing but I’m just hoping to get a shot…He’s [Chavez Jr.] unbelievable, he’s grown in leaps and bounds in the last two years. I think he’s the best young champion that’s out there today.”

It sure does sound like Mundine wants a fight with Chavez Jr., because he’s gushing like crazy saying all the right things to make sure he gets in good with Chavez Jr. and his people to get selected. However, it’s not about kissing up that will land Mundine the fight with Chavez Jr. He’s probably got to look vulnerable because right now Mundine is fighting a little too good and I think that’s going to get him ignored. Mundine might need to visit the canvas a couple of times in his next bout and then come back and get a win if he’s to possibly get a chance against Chavez Jr. If you look at the guys that Chavez Jr. has been facing, they’ve looked vulnerable in recent fights going into their bout with him.
