Image: Mosley has other options after Alvarez fight; Kell Brook wants him in JulyBy William Mackay: 40-year-old Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) probably never thought he’s stick around long enough to find himself at the bottom of the boxing chain with the young lions like WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alavarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) using him to add a notch on his belt the easy way now that Mosley has lost a lot of his once impressive skills.

Mosley faces Alvarez for his World Boxing Council title on May 5th, and I’m sure Mosley is glad to get the payday. Mosley is also in demand for unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s), who is looking for a big named opponent like Mosley for his next fight on July 7th in the UK. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn specifically mentioned wanting Mosley – if he’s interested – to come to the UK to be the opponent for the young 25-year-old Brook.

It’s unclear whether Mosley will be able to make that date given that it comes only two months after his May 5th fight against Alvarez. It’s not a lot of time for Mosley to recover from whatever damage that he sustains in the Alvarez fight, and he’d have little time to get ready for Brook’s fighting style. Mosley is good enough to figure out what he needs to do in a short training camp, but it would be a really tough task for Mosley to come back that quickly to fight Brook, especially in front of what would likely be a huge crowd of 10,000+ British fans.

Mosley might not like the idea of being used as fodder for a non-champion like Brook, and I think it’s unlikely that Mosley will agree to take the fight unless Hearn offers him a huge amount of money. I can’t see that happening unless Sky Sports helped out with chipping in some money to make it possible. It’s sad that Mosley would be used as a stepping stone for Brook to pick up a win over a notable opponent, but that seems to be the norm in boxing nowadays with younger fighters looking to beat faded fighters like Mosley to get credibility with the boxing fans.
