Image: Magdaleno stops Beltran Jr; Garcia defeats UgasBy Jim Dower: Unbeaten super featherweight contender Diego Magdaleno (22-0, 8 KO’s) defeated replacement opponent Fernando Beltran Jr. (36-8-1, 20 KO’s) by a 7th round TKO on Friday night at the Casino Del Sol, in Tucson, Arizona.

Unexpectedly, Magdaleno, #2 WBA, #3 WBC, #8 WBO, #12 IBF, was knocked to the canvas by Beltran Jr. in the 4th round. This caused Magdaleno to turn on the jets and start pounding the badly overmatched journeyman Beltran Jr. Magdaleno knocked Beltran Jr. down in the 7th and the fight was soon halted by Beltran Jr’s corner when they threw in the towel.

In something of an upset, Johny Garcia (12-0, 8 KO’s) defeated previously unbeaten former Cuban amateur star an ex-2008 Bronze medalist in the 2008 Olympics Yordenis Ugas (11-1, 5 KO’s) by an eight round split decision. The final judges’ scores were 76-75, 76-75 for the 29-year-old Smith from Holland, Michigan. The final judge scored it 76-75 for the 25-year-old Ugas.

Garcia was knocked down in the 5th by Ugas. However, Garcia kept applying pressure and was able to wear down the slender Ugas to get the decision. Ugas showed vulnerability to pressure in his last fight against 31-year-old Esteban Almaraz last January. Although Ugas won the fight by an eight round unanimous decision, Almaraz created a blueprint in how to beat Ugas by putting heavy pressure on him in the 8th round.
