By Allan Fox: In a huge upset, #8 WBC flyweight contender Sony Boy Jaro (34-10-5, 24 KO’s) stopped World Boxing Council flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (83-4-2, 44 KO’s) in the 6th round on Friday night at the Chonburi, Thailand. Jaron knocked the 34-year-old Wonjongkam with big right hands in the 1st, 3rd and twice in the 6th rounds.
The fight was halted after the second knockdown in the 6th. Jaro was penalized one point for landing a right hand low in the 6th. He came back well and immediately knocked Wonjongkam to the canvas with a powerful right hand. The way Wonjongkam got back to his feet it was clear he wasn’t going to make it out of the round. Jaro attacked Wonjongkam immediately, backing him up against the ropes and flurrying him until he collapsed from a left-right combination. The referee immediately halted the fight at that point.
This was the second reign as WBC champion for Wonjongkam, who held it initially from 2001 to 2007. This time, he held it from 2010 to 2012. Wonjongkam received a lot of criticism from some boxing fans for sometimes facing less than stellar opposition.
Wonjongkam would have done a lot better in this fight had he opted to try and box the 29-year-old Jaro rather than standing in front of him and attempting to slug it out. That was playing into Jaro’s hands, as he loves to slug it out and he’s good at it. Wonjongkam is a power puncher as well, but he clearly didn’t have the same kind of power that Jaro possessed and ended up taking a beating. Early on you could see that Wonjongkam was going to have problems when he was knocked down by a right hand from Jaro in the 1st round. Instead of boxing, Wonjongkam attempted to slug and kept getting hit with big bombs.
