Image: Saul Alvarez looking to get his first big name scalp against 40-year-old Mosley on 5/5By Eric Thomas: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) will be looking to get his first big named scalp to add to his still developing fight resume on May 5th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto HBO pay-per-view fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alvarez, 21, agreed to take the undercard fight with the 40-year-old Mosley if he’d get a guarantee that he’ll get a shot against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. in late 2012 or early 2013. Apparently, Alvarez has gotten his wish and will be facing Mayweather in the near future, although it’s still too early to know when that will actually be happening. But in the meantime, Alvarez has a nice little fight against the pretty completely shot Mosley in May. Mosley doesn’t think he’s shot and blames his last horrible performance against Manny Pacquiao on an Achilles tendon injury.

It sounds good if you’re memory of Mosley’s past fights stops right there. However, Mosley also looked poor in his 12 round draw against Sergio Mora and his lopsided 12 round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. before that. So you can see that Mosley is on the downhill slide in his career and will be in big trouble against Alvarez on May 5th.

Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Alvarez, has kept him away from fighters that are a threat to beating him lately, which is why we’ve seen Alvarez matched against welterweight Matthew Hatton for the vacant World Boxing Council title rather than an actual junior middleweight contender, and then we’ve seen Alvarez put in with Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gomez and Kermit Cintron. None of those guys were any threat to him, and Gomez was little more than small welterweight.

Mosley is another welterweight-sized opponent for Alvarez, except he’s not even ranked in the top 15 by any of the organizations as of now. Don’t worry; by the time the fight takes place on May 5th, the WBC will likely have Mosley ranked in the top five in the junior middleweight division which will Alvarez and Golden Boy cover for making this fight.
