Mayweather-Cotto a huge fight; Pacquiao-Bradley a huge disappointment for fans

Image: Mayweather-Cotto a huge fight; Pacquiao-Bradley a huge disappointment for fansBy Chris Williams: I don’t know what it is about Floyd Mayweather Jr. but he seems to get the advantage over Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum every time he fights.

For example, while Pacquiao has to settle for facing Timothy Bradley on June 9th in a fight that boxing fans are already pretty much unanimously turned off towards, Mayweather gets to fight boxing’s #3 ranked pay per view star WBA light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in what shapes up to be an exciting fight that may bring in as many as 2 million PPV buys or more.

Pacquiao-Bradley will be lucky if it breaks 1 million buys, because it’s a bad fight with Pacquiao matched against a guy that’s not in his class. If I was Pacquiao’s promoter, I would never in a million years waste time matching Pacquiao up with Bradley, who hasn’t prove he can sell out even small venues, let alone attract fans to an expensive PPV fight.

I would have rather have put Pacquiao in with old retreads like Juan Manuel Marquez or Antonio Margarito than have him fight an unproven small guy with no power like Bradley. It’s just a dumb fight. The fight I would have put together would be a rematch between Pacquiao and Cotto. That’s the gold standard for opponents and Pacquiao and Arum blew it by not agreeing to the catchweight that Cotto was asking for.
Pacquiao-Bradley will be a sick mismatch. When Bradley tries his tricks on the inside, he’ll be getting hit with so many hard shots from Pacquiao that will probably see Bradley bleeding and swollen after a few rounds of action. From there it will go downhill with Bradley with no real chance just throwing his weak punches and getting obliterated by the much faster Pacquiao. It’s going to be like putting Ricky Hatton back in there with Pacquiao and expecting a different outcome.

The Mayweather vs. Cotto fight promises to be an incredibly exciting fight that really could be one of the beat fights of the entire year. Cotto will bring it and with his new trainer, he’s going to be adapting to Mayweather’s counter punching and looking for his own opportunities to land counter shots.
