Image: Peterson's trainer: Khan and his camp are just making excuses for his lossBy Allen Fox: Barry Hunter, the trainer for IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s), sees the latest hoopla being made about a mystery man seen speaking with one of the judges during Peterson’s fight against Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) as just more excuses for Khan and his team.

Hunter told Sky Sports News “Before this guy, this mystery man, it was about the referee [Joe Cooper], it was about the judges. What next? My thing is we need to get back to boxing. We have to step back and see what’s best for Lamont and what’s best for his future as champion.”

Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, is trying to get the Khan-Peterson fight result changed to a no contest so that Khan can get his title belts back. Before the mystery man fluff came up, Schaefer felt he had enough to get the fight result changed to a no contest based on Khan having two points deducted for shoving Peterson, as well as the delay in the judges revealing their score cards.

It was flimsy proof at best, but Golden Boy put a lot of money in the appeal process with the IBF and WBA, enough to where there already was a good chance of getting an immediate rematch ordered. But with the latest mystery man stuff revealed, Khan may not only get an immediate rematch ordered but also could have the fight result changed to a no contest. If that’s the case, then the $1 million offer that was made to Peterson for a rematch could drop dramatically to a lesser amount, if Khan even wants to fight him again. Khan likely still will want to fight Peterson again to try and prove people wrong that he is the better fighter and deserved the win last time.

But the fight being overturned will create a lot of negative press for Khan and he may not get the fight anyway if the offer is lowered to Peterson for a rematch. His trainer has already said that they would vacate the titles if they have to in order to get the better fight. The only fight out there that would be better is a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao.
