Image: Peterson trainer pleased that Khan and Golden Boy dropped their IBF appealBy Scott Gilfoid: Barry Hunter, the trainer for IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, was incredibly pleased to learn the news that team Khan and Golden Boy Promotions have dropped their appeal to the IBF to try and get the results of the fight overturned.

Here’s Hunter’s statement as quoted by Dan Rafael of ESPN: “We are extremely pleased that Golden Boy and Amir Khan withdrew their protest with the IBF. As we have said all along, we were not going to be forced to make a decision by one person or entity.“

This is good news because it was a waste International Boxing Federation’s time to have a hearing on this matter. Khan’s appeal was baseless in my view due to his lack of anything meaningful in the way of evidence to have the fight overturned.

Look at the stuff he was complaining about:

• The first knockdown, which was ruled a trip, should have been allowed
• The two point deductions for Khan pushing shouldn’t have happened
• Mystery man – who did little other than sit and watch the fight
• Scorecard irregularities which turned out to be nothing

Liakhovich wants fight with Arreola

Former WBO heavyweight champion Sergiy Liahovich (25-4, 16 KOs) is targeting a fight against heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (34-2, 29 KO’s) after Liakhovich’s previously scheduled opponent for this Saturday night, Eddie Chambers, came up with a rib injury and had to pull out of the fight. Liakhovich isn’t happen about it and is looking to fight another big name and that’s where Arreola comes in. Arreola is cheduled to fight next month on February 18th in Corpus Christi and still doesn’t have an opponent picked out for that date. Arreola wants a big name and Liakhovich would be perfect if he take the fight. Arreola has won his last six fights and is looking really imporved. Liakhovich looked pretty decent in his losing effort against a then healthy Robert Helenius last August. Although he lost the fight by a 9th round TKO, Liakhovich was giving him a lot of problems with his power and inside attack. Liakhovich ran out of gas in the 9th but he might have enough in the tank to beat Arreola.
