Image: Pacquiao team say Mayweather fight doesn't make economic sense on May 5thBy Chris Williams: While the entire world is asking for a bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. for May 5th, Team Pacquiao is resistant to the idea of taking the fight on that date, believing that it will mean a loss of revenue for Pacquiao if he agrees to take it. The money lost will be the money could get in theory of a 45,000 seat outdoor arena is assembled on the Las Vegas strip for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Greed is good, I guess.

Compared to the 16,800 seat MGM Grand arena, where Mayweather wants to fight on May 5th, there’s a lot more seats available for boxing fans. Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz has done the math and figures that an additional $30 million could be brought in with the extra seating. Pacquiao wouldn’t get all of the cash obviously, but he would get a nice percentage of it The thing is with the arena, it supposedly won’t be done until the end of May some reason.

I have time believing that an arena won’t be built in time for the fight on May 5th, because if you people putting skycrapers together in a matter of weeks, how can you not put a simple 45,000 seat arena together in four months? Come on, grab some chairs, line them up on the concrete on the Vegas strip, and you’re there. What more do you need? I think it’s an excuse by Koncz and Bob Arum to keep Pacquiao from fighting Mayweather on May 5th and getting beaten by him.

Koncz said this to the AP: “Why would I tell Manny to fight on the 5th and throw away a percentage of $30 million? That’s crazy! ”

It may sound crazy, but at least you have a fight. If you don’t fight Mayweather, then you have to settle for a much smaller payday against one of these guys: Timothy Bradley, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Lamont Peterson. Pacquiao could lose to one of those guys, and if that happens, Konz will be crying for not having matched Pacquiao up with Mayweather when he had stime to cash out.
