This is the fight that Wladimir wanted because it’s one of the few recognizable names in the heavyweight division. Unfortunately, it’s a name associated with the cruiserweight division where at one time Mormeck was one of the best fighters in the division, holding down the WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles.

However, that was many years ago and he’s done anything since 2007 when Mormeck lost his titles to David Haye in a 7th round TKO loss. It’s been mediocrity since then for Mormeck. He took two years off from boxing, came back at heavyweight and has won three consecutive questionable decisions at home in Paris, France and at the same time, the sanctioning bodies have been incredibly kind to him, giving Mormeck a ranking of #9 WBO, #9 IBF and #10 WBA despite his very questionable decision win in three fights.

Wladimir doesn’t seem to care about the controversy of Mormeck’s wins, as long as he got the victories. This is a fight that will be lucky if it goes even six rounds. Mormeck is short, there to be hit and will be outweighed by at least 30lbs on March 3rd.

Mormeck may have left the cruiserweight division, but he’s still pretty much little more than a cruiserweight fighting at heavyweight without really having been tested. He’s going from a win over Timur Ibragimov straight into a title shot against Wladimir.

It’s not the kind of transition fight that you’re looking for to prepare someone for a fight of this magnitude. Mormeck needed to fight someone like Odlanier Solis before fighting for a title. I guess it doesn’t matter. This is a mismatch and it’s going to end early and Wladimir will have more mismatches later this year starting with 40-year-old Tony Thompson.
