Image: Warren wants an immediate rematch for Chisora against HeleniusBy Sean McDaniel: Frank Warren, the promoter for Derek Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s), is going to appeal Chisora’s recent loss to Robert Helenius (17-0, 11 KO’s) to the European Boxing Union to try and get an immediate rematch after Helenius defeated Chisora by a controversial 12 round split decision last Saturday night in Helsinki, Finland.

The judges scored the fight 115-113, 115-113 for Helenius and 115-113 for Chisora. However, the scores seemed way out of touch with what actually transpired in the ring and it’s created a huge uproar with boxing fans all around the world.

Chisora appeared win the fight by 9 rounds to 3, and the rounds that Chisora won were really one-sided rounds where there was no question that he won them with his nonstop power punching.

Warren told the BBC “It was one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in a long time…I don’t know how Helenius can hold his head up and claim he won the fight when he knows he lost. Helenius was supposed to be the next big thing and the man to challenge the Klitshkos, but Dereck totally exposed him and I’m being generous to give Helenius four winning rounds in the fight. I’ll be speaking to the EBU as well as the other organizations about an immediate rematch.”

I think Warren is being generous because I don’t see how Helenius won four rounds. It would have to be an early Christmas present to give him that many rounds. He just looked terrible. Chisora landed some major bombs in this fight, at least two huge shots in every round and I’m surprised that Helenius stayed on his feet.

I personally didn’t see Helenius as the next big thing. He was already badly exposed in his last fight by a rusty 35-year-old Sergiy Liakhovich. Helenius won that fight, but took a major beating in winning it. Liakhovich is a decent fighter but nothing special, but Helenius struggled badly against that guy. I kind of doubt that Helenius’ management will give Chisora a rematch anytime soon.

I can see them moving on and looking for some more soft touches for Helenius to fight. The guy has built his unbeaten record on 2nd tier heavyweights and the few names he’s got on his resume – Likahovich, Samuel Peter and Lamon Brewster – were old heavyweights that didn’t have much left in the tank. Only Liakhovich put any real pressure on Helenius.
