Image: Khan says rematch is set for 3/31; Peterson's trainer says that's not trueBy William Mackay: It looks as if Amir Khan went and unilaterally picked out the date of March 31st, including the city of Las Vegas, for his hoped for rematch against the new IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson.

But it’s too bad Khan didn’t check with Peterson and his trainer Barry Hunter before picking a date because Hunter doesn’t know what Khan is talking about. Speaking with MMA Nation, Hunter said “We don’t know nothing about a March fight in Vegas.”

Khan said earlier tonight on his facebook page that the rematch with Peterson will happen on March 31st in Las Vegas. Did Khan do this without even the courtesy of running it by Peterson and his trainer? It sure looks like it.

I know Khan badly wants to try and get his titles back after losing to Peterson by a 12 round split decision last weekend in Washington, DC, but you’d think the guy would at least check it out with Peterson to see if he’s agreeable to it.

I think Khan has become too used to throwing his weight around with his titles and it hasn’t registered with him mentally that he’s the defeated challenger, not the champion anymore. Khan doesn’t call the shots.

If I’m Hunter and Peterson, I’d be very wary of signing for a rematch with Khan until I’m certain I’m getting the best deal possible. If those guys rush into this, they could find themselves getting the short end of everything.

Khan is Golden Boy Promotions’ gravy train fighter and they obviously will be looking to get every advantage they can for their fledgling super star. He just got badly exposed by Peterson last Saturday in a fight that Khan was a huge favorite in.

They’re obviously going to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. I think Hunter needs to be careful to read the fine print when he signs a contract for the rematch, and ideally he should try and get a title defense in between the Khan rematch to get another payday before. That’s what a lot of new champions do and I think Peterson shouldn’t be any different.
