Image: Humberto Soto wants Khan or Maidana boutsBy Dan Ambrose: Former World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Humberto Soto (57-7-2, 34 KO’s) picked up another win at light welterweight tonight in stopping Adailton De Jesus (29-7, 23 KO’s) in the 4th round in a noncompetitive fight in Mexico.

Soto, ranked #1 by the World Boxing Association, now wants a shot at Amir Khan, the WBA Super World light welterweight champion or WBA regular light welterweight title holder Marcos Maidana. The chances of Soto getting the Khan fight are nonexistent.

And the Maidana fight will be a dangerous one that likely won’t be a really big payday. Soto will have to really earn his money in that fight and he may end up losing. Soto moved up to light welterweight from the lightweight division seeking bigger paydays.

Unfortunately the guy that Soto would like to fight, Amir Khan, is on the verge of moving up in weight and he probably no interest in facing a guy that’s not well known in the United States like Soto.

It doesn’t matter that Soto has a lot of talent, he’s not known by casual boxing fans in the United States. This is going to make it tough on Soto to get the kinds of fights he wants to. Maidana is probably the best option for him right now, because WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley would likely beat him.

Soto should wait around until Khan vacates his IBF title and then go after that belt against Lamont Peterson or Danny Garcia. I don’t like Soto’s chances against either of those guys. They’re both big and strong, and Soto couldn’t even decisively beat little Urbano Antillon. He’ll have problems against the bigger light welterweights in the division and he be better off moving back down in weight, even though it probably means less money.
