Image: Saul Alvarez hoping Golden Boy will get him Mayweather Jr. fight for May 5thBy Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez got by Kermit Cintron tonight by a 5th round TKO. This was Alvarez’s third title defense and he’s still get to face a live body.

However, Alvarez wants to rectify that himself by taking on unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5th in Las Vegas in 2012, Alvarez is really counting on his promoters at Golden Boy being able to line him up with Mayweather.

It sounds like a reasonable thing to ask for but I’m afraid Golden Boy will be powerless to make this fight unless it’s one that Mayweather wants, and you never can tell what kind of opponent he’s interested in fighting. Alvarez, 21, may have hurt his case for a Mayweather fight by looking too good in stopping Cintron tonight.

Mayweather, as good as he is, he seldom faces dangerous punchers. While he did fight Victor Ortiz in his last fight, Ortiz is a fighter that had recently moved up from light welterweight and he’s not considered a big welterweight. Alvarez, though, is a big junior middleweight and Mayweather would be giving up a lot of size against him. Mayweather might not want to risk facing Alvarez and possibly getting stopped. If Shane Mosley was able to hurt Mayweather in their fight not too long ago, then Alvarez will certainly be a big threat to him.

Just because Alvarez is asking Golden Boy to make the Mayweather fight doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. I kind of seriously doubt that Golden Boy will be able to push Mayweather to take the fight with Alvarez right now.
