Image: Pacquiao wonders who will take over when he retiresBy Chris Williams: WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is now thinking about who will be the super star that takes over boxing after he retires from the sport at some time in the future.

There really isn’t any younger fighters that are clearly going to be the guy that can dominate after Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. step down in the future.

Pacquiao told fighthub.com “I can announce my retirement. No problem to me if I’m going to retire. The problem is who else can be Manny Pacquiao? We love boxing. I love boxing. Of course, when the time comes, I want somebody holding the torch, to continue boxing after me. It doesn’t matter to me, as long as there’s one fighter, and one boxer who can be an idol to all the fans.”

I think Pacquiao is getting kind of carried away with his thoughts. He’s idol to some boxing fans, but there are a lot of fans who see him as someone who has been created with careful match making in order for him to win catch weight titles, and pick up belts in numerous divisions but often not against the best fighter in that division. It doesn’t matter who steps up after Pacquiao is gone. That fighter probably won’t last long unless they’re carefully matched. Some think it’ll be Amir Khan, but it’s hard to see him staying on top long without being kept away from punchers.

Pacquiao’s legacy is incomplete because he never fought Mayweather, and has two highly questionable decisions over Juan Manuel Marquez that a lot of boxing fans think should have gone to Marquez. And many people think Mayweather would easily beat Pacquiao if they fought, and it’s hard to disagree with that. Once wonders why Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, never matched Pacquiao up with Mayweather.
