Image: Khan: I want to clean up the welterweight divisionBy William Mackay: Despite not having faced and/or beaten all the top fighters at light welterweight, IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) says he plans on moving up in weight to the 147 pound division to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. and dominate the division.

“I want to go up there [welterweight] and clear up the division,” Khan said to Sky Sports News. “Mayweather talks a lot of trash. He disrespects his fighters and disrespect presenters. I’d never do that. I’m a humble guy. Boxing teaches you discipline and he should be a disciplined fighter. He should be the face of boxing in a good way, not a bad way.”

I think there would be some disagreement on the subject of Khan being humble in the minds of many boxing fans. Khan hardly seems humble. That’s not how I would describe him. But as far as Khan cleaning up the welterweight division goes, how can he begin to clean up the division when he never did in the past at lightweight or light welterweight.

Khan still has to beat Breidis Prescott, Lucas Matthysse, Mike Alvarado, Humberto Soto, and Timothy Bradley before Khan can be considered as having cleaned out the light welterweight division. And at welterweight, once Khan gets beaten by Mayweather, you can rule out Khan cleaning out that division.

Mayweather will beat Khan, as would Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz, Mike Jones, Manny Pacquiao [if Khan would ever agree to fight him] and possibly Randall Bailey. There’s a lot of fighters that Khan would have to take on and beat for him to be considered having cleaned out the welterweight division, and the problem is Khan likely won’t even face half of them.

Khan fights Lamont Peterson on December 10th in Washington DC. Khan shouldn’t be overlooking this guy because he’s the best opponent that Khan has faced since he defeated Marcos Maidana last December.
