There still isn’t an opponent picked out for the 31-year-old Maccarinelli, but you can’t expect too much for him.

After all this will be the first time the tall 6’4” Maccarinelli will have fought at 175 lbs. Maccarinelli hasn’t fought since last year in September when he was viciously knocked out in the 7th round by cruiserweight contender Alexander Frenkel. For Maccarinelli, that was his fourth KO loss in the past three years, and all have them have looked really bad. Now Maccarinelli is taking off 25 pounds to fight at 175.

It’s difficult to imagine that Maccarinelli will find any success at this weight, as he’s taking off muscle in order to get down to the light heavyweight limit. Maccarinelli wants to fight WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly at some point in the near future, but for that fight to happen Maccarinelli is going to have to pick up a number of solid wins over decent fighters.

I doubt he’ll be required to beat an actual contender to get fight with Cleverly, because the fight itself will be too hard to turn down due to the money that can be made. But Maccarinelli is going to have to at the minimum prove that he can beat some B level fighters that have a bit of talent. He’s not going to be able to walk into a title fight against Cleverly based on three wins over C class fighters. But it might be difficult for Maccarinelli to beat even a 2nd tier fighter at this weight.

I’m sure he’s got the power to beat these guys, but he’s probably going to be weak, and these guys are a lot faster than a lot of the cruiserweights that Maccarinelli has fought in the past with the exception of David Haye. With Maccarinelli all it takes is one big shot and he’s staggering around. I don’t expect that to change now that he’s moving down in weight. We may not see Maccarinelli lose immediately, because his next opponent will probably be very weak, but if they put him in with a decent B level fighter after that, you can expect to see Maccarinelli dropping for the 10 count again.
