The loss of Mattysse-Morales really hurts the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV card

Image: The loss of Mattysse-Morales really hurts the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV cardBy Jason Kim: Things are looking awfully bleak for the September 17th Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz pay per view card with the loss of the Erik Morales vs. Lucas Matthysse fight on Thursday with the news that Matthysse was pulling out due to a severe viral infection. The fight is going for $50+ on PPV, and that’s a lot of money for what appears to be only one good fight between Mayweather and Ortiz. Unless a suitable big-named opponent is found to step in and fight Morales, I can see this hurting the PPV sales numbers.

Here are the fights that are currently on the card:

Saul Alvarez vs. Alfonso Gomez [split site bout]
Erik Morales vs. TBA
Jessie Vargas vs. Josesito Lopez
Said Ouali vs. Carson Jones
Marco Antonio Periban vs. TBA
Anthony Crolla vs. Juan Montiel
Adonis Stevenson vs. Dion Savage
Kyrone Butler vs. TBA

The only good fights on the card is the Mayweather vs. Ortiz, and Alvarez vs. Gomez. However, the Gomez-Alvarez bout figures to be a mismatch that will likely end early with the over matched Gomez getting blasted out as soon as Alvarez hits him hard to the body. Other than that, there’s nothing there that would make boxing fans want to pay to see this card.

And it’s looking like the replacement opponent that is selected to fight Morales for the vacant WBC light welterweight title will be a weak one, possibly the inexperienced Crolla if the WBC is willing to sanction a fight between Morales and Crolla. That’s a terrible pick a title fight because he’s over matched and shouldn’t be fighting for a title when he’s not even the best fighter in his own weight class in his native country of the UK.
