Image: Ortiz: I'll fight Mayweather for free; If he's not interested, I'm moving onBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) has made his final statement on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Ortiz episode, saying that he still wants a rematch with Mayweather, but if he doesn’t give him one then Ortiz will be moving on shortly. Ortiz says he doesn’t want the rematch for the money, but rather for peace of mind.

Ortiz said this to RingTV: “I’m going to put this behind me. The reason I want the rematch is not for the money, but for the integrity, the dignity and the honor of our sport and for the fans. If Floyd Mayweather wants to give me the rematch, then I will be waiting for him with open arms. If he doesn’t want to give us a rematch, then we will move on, and we’ll see him in the hall of fame in 15 years. If he does want to want to give us the rematch, to show that it’s not for money, we will fight do it for free.”

This was really touching. Ortiz is a great orator. I believe him that he’ll fight Mayweather for free, not that Mayweather will give him a rematch unfortunately. I think Mayweather wants no part of a rematch with the hard hitting Ortiz, and likely feels that he dodged a bullet by taking Ortiz out with a cheap shot in the 4th round when Ortiz’s guard was down. This all happened before Ortiz had even had a chance to warm up and really start laying the leather on Floyd.

Ortiz needs to start planning his next fight with someone else because Mayweather won’t fight him again and he’s just wasting his time holding out with the dream that Mayweather will suddenly call him about a rematch. That’s make believe stuff. Mayweather is content with the victory and doesn’t feel any shame out the win despite a large percentage of boxing fans feeling it was a cheap victory.
