Are Roy Jones’ rivals passing him by?

Image: Are Roy Jones’ rivals passing him by?By Christopher Young: I’m one of Roy Jones biggest fan and had the pleasure to watch him fight live in Tampa back in 05”. To watch him dominate the 90’s and the early part of 2000’s with his speed and pure athleticism was just simply amazing, defeating former champions like Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Montell Griffin, Mike McCallum, Virgil Hill, Lou Del Valle, Richard Hall, Clinton Woods, John Ruiz, and Antonio Tarver.

Now looking at the past all the way to the present, I was wondering if I was in Roy’s shoes, how will I feel about the boxing landscape today. I mean, does it bother him that his boxing rivals are doing and performing better than him in their advanced age?

Last July, we recently had Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver winning the IBO Cruiserweight title in Australia against Danny Green –– in Danny’s own backyard, plus Tarver stopping him in the 9th round. This is the same man (Danny Green) that stopped Roy in the first round and Tarver handled him quite easy.

Next you have Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins who keeps defying “father time” and recently won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Light-Heavyweight title from Jean Pascal in his home country. Not only did B-hop got jobbed in the first fight last December but he went back to Canada and took the title from the Champion to make history on becoming the oldest man to win a world title. Now he is about to defend his championship against one of the best light-heavyweights in Chad Dawson on October 15th. Win or lose is going to be an interesting fight.

Then you have the Road Warrior Glen Johnson. He is about to fight for the IBF super-middleweight title against undefeated Lucien Bute on November 5th. Even though Lucien is a heavy favorite I’m not ready to write the road warrior off yet. He is a very live under dog in this fight and he is fighting Bute in his home country. If Glen can pull this upset off this will make three 40 year old plus fighters in less than 6 months to win world titles.

And last but certainly not least you have James “Lights Out” Toney about to take on recently “Roy Jones conqueror” Denis Lebedev in Russia on November 4th where Lebedev brutally knock out Roy Jones in the last second of the last round. This fight between Toney and Lebedev is going to be a crowd-pleaser, in which, I believe Toney will have his hand raise at the end. Lebedev is a slugger who comes to fight with a squared stance. This would most likely give Toney a great advantage with his style of fighting. Since Toney is fighting in Lebedev home country you know that Toney will try not to leave it in the judges’ hands.

This is not a knock on Roy by any stretch. But to see the men that he has beaten in his prime saddens me for Roy. His rivals who will be linked with him forever: Hopkins, Toney, Tarver, and Johnson have not only come back and stayed relevant but to deal with Jones’s past opponents with ease and/or greater success…this has to bother him and his ego; especially when he knows that those four future legends are all slightly older than him.
