Image: Will Floyd Mayweather stop Victor Ortiz?By Gerardo Granados: Boxing is not just power, strength, speed or a good chin, you better be skilled. Not even the flamboyant new arrogant attitude of Ortiz can match the skills of the master of defensive style Floyd Mayweather Jr. Yes, Victor Ortiz is a good fighter with a big heart, determined with good power in both hands, but he might lack of the most important boxing skills: defense.

Victor is wild, when he swings he tends to leave his chin wide open to counter shots. He has engaged against average opposition except of Marcos Maidana who make him quit and Andre Berto who never fought against a top pound for pound boxer. Floyd doesn’t have iron fist but he is accurate, fast counter puncher.

Ortiz might be tailor made for Mayweather. If Oscar De la Hoya who was bigger and powerful, way more experienced and better over all skilled than Victor was not able to defeat Floyd; Mosley lost; Marquez was unable to compete; Hatton was unable to hurt Floyd and was totally dominated; the late Genaro Hernandez only lost to De la Hoya and Mayweather; Diego Corrales was bigger and better skilled than Ortiz when he fought Floyd and lost; then what are the real chances of Ortiz for success?

Floyd might be getting old, and due his long recess his legs and reflexes could not be the same as they were eight years ago but he might be even smarter than ever and for sure he already has figured out the one dimensional style of Ortiz. How hard is it to counter punch Ortiz? You don’t need to be a power puncher to stop your rival; if you are a fast accurate puncher you will do the job.

Victor might end up trying to defeat a better boxer with a single punch. Problem for him is that he does not have the granite chin to rely on if he plans to keep pressure for the full round. He may get lucky and land a big shot that could floored Floyd but he might don’t have the skills nor the experience to finish the fight.

You don’t have to be a Floyd fan to admire his pure boxing technique, not only his masterful defensive skills also his superior counterpunching and ring smarts. He is able to adjust during a round with ease and is surprising how quick he is able to decipher his rivals. He does not need to move all the time around the ring to avoid been hit, he can stand in front of his rival with his cross arm guard and make him miss, also on times taking the balance off too.

Victor is starving for fame, glory and fortune, and that might be his major weakness, because he needs to keep control on his nerves, also he does not have the experience to deal with a complicated boxer as Floyd is.

Take time to examine the footwork and average defensive skills of Victor, maybe you could agree that Ortiz might be tailor made for Floyd. Ortiz tends to keep his head high, when he throws a combination he leaves big holes and is unable to properly slip or roll with the power punches. Although this fight will be exciting to watch due the aggressive style of Ortiz it may not last the full twelve rounds because Floyd could end the fight as soon as he hurt Ortiz who doesn’t have a granite chin.

Next September 17th a lucky punch could bring Victor Ortiz the glory of defeating Floyd Mayweather, although the young lion might be able to upset the odds if his chin can hold for the full twelve rounds.
