Image: Maidana vs. Guerrero in a war on 8/27By Sean McDaniel: Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) has had great success in moving up weight classes and still being able to win and look good in doing so. However, on August 27th, Guerrero is running into the hardest puncher in the light welterweight division in the form of WBA regular light welterweight Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) in their fight at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Amir Khan, the previous WBA regular champion, was recently elevated to the WBA Super World light welterweight title, while Maidana, the WBA light welterweight interim champion, was then elevated to the regular WBA light welterweight champion. It’s a weird way of winning a title, but I’m sure Maidana won’t complain too much, because he’s fought remarkably well in the past two years in fights against Khan, Victor Cayor and Victor Ortiz.

Some boxing fans feel that Maidana would have knocked Khan out had the referee working that fight, Joe Cortez, not broken up the action so often in the last three rounds when Khan was badly hurt and taking terrible one-sided punishment from Maidana.

Guerrero is one of those rare fighters that is well suited to either boxing or slugging. He can go from one form of fighting to the other based on his mood. However, for this fight Guerrero is going to have to focus more on boxing if he doesn’t want to take punishment. That doesn’t seem to be what Guerrero has in mind for this fight, though. He seems recognize that the best way to get attention from the networks like HBO and Showtime is to fight in a fan-pleasing way by taking the fight to his opponent and slugging.

This is the best way to pick up fans in a hurry. We saw what it did for Erik Morales in his last fight against Maidana. Although Morales would lose the fight to Maidana by a 12 round decision, he stood in front of Maidana for the full 12 rounds and freely traded without running around the ring like Khan did when he fought Maidana.
