Image: Khan interested in facing Morales if he beats MatthysseBy William Mackay: WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) is reportedly interested in taking on Erik Morales if he emerges the winner of his fight on September 17th against Lucas Matthysse (28-2, 26 KO’s) for the vacant World Boxing Council light welterweight title that previously belonged to Timothy Bradley.

Since the chances of Morales beating a prime Matthysse aren’t very good, Khan may have a big decision to make about whether he would be interested in facing the powerful hard hitting Matthysee. Thus far, Khan is keeping quiet about whether he would want to fight Matthysse. It’s not likely Khan will want to fight the tough Argentinian because he’s very similar to Marcos Maidana, a fighter that Khan barely escaped with a win against last December.

Khan was staggering around, grabbing holding for the last three rounds while Maidana drilled him with shot after shot to the head. It was very strange fight because while Maidana was trying to finish Khan off the referee constantly got in the way and was literally pulling Maidana off of Khan while he was teeing off on him while he had Khan on the ropes.

I’ve never seen anything like that before. I doubt Khan wants any part of a fighter that is any way similar to Maidana. It would be a bad match up for Khan, who does well against fighters that can’t punch but struggles when facing punchers like Maidana and Breidis Prescott. Matthysse is in the same class as Maidana and Prescott. As such, don’t hold your breath waiting on Khan to pick Matthysse as his next opponent if he makes Morales look like an old man on September 17th.
