Image: Floyd Mayweather - Born in the USABy Liam Brindle: Let me start by stating that I am English and I am not writing this article to generate heated debates like other writers on here.

Floyd Mayweather Jr is a five-division world champion, where he has won ten world titles, including the lineal championship.

He is a two-time The Ring “Fighter of the Year” winning the award in 1998 and 2007 and also Boxing Writers Association of America “Fighter of the Year” in 2007.

He was formerly rated as the “number one” pound-for-pound best boxer in the world by most sporting news and boxing websites, including The Ring, BoxRec.com, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, BBC Sports and Yahoo! Sports and in my opinion he still is the p4p king.

In 1996 he won an Olympic bronze medal with the stars and stripes across his back and was robbed in the semi final.

Since he competed in the Olympics in 1996 at 57kg he has dominated the sport right the way up to 70kg.

He has been accused of ‘ducking’ fighters throughout his career but looking at his resume I cant see many names that are missing apart from Pacquiao, I mean would names like : Cotto, Margarito etc really add much substance?

Anyway I don’t want to get dragged into who ducked who and why.

The point of this article is to ask this question, why does Floyd Mayweather Jr get booed in the country he was born in and represents as on of the very best to ever do it?

I do understand that people perceive Mayweathers confidence as arrogance but I am sure that he has earnt the right to be ‘over confident’ I mean if you speak to any fighter that has boxed at the very highest level and won 90% of them with ease and taking very very little punishment in the process, they would be over flowing with confidence.

I understand that he earns an incredible amount of money when he competes and he is not shy about discussing amounts, but again hasn’t he earned the right to earn that amount of money and surely it is his prerogative if he chooses to disclose this info.

On the other side when Floyd fights think how much money is generated and jobs created in a time when the financial climate is so bad, surely this can only ever be a good thing.

The box office numbers are ridiculous, arenas sell out in no time and the media circus that is created is beyond anything seen in the sports history.

Like I say I understand people not liking him for who he is but surely as a nation to see an American doing what he does at the level that he does it and with the skill and style and the level that he performs at must make most Americans proud? So a few boos are understandable but to cheer an English, Mexican, Filipino or whatever nationality faces Floyd and to boo him just seems very strange in my opinion.

Floyd came to England to promote the Marquez fight and was blown away by the reception that he received, people turned out in the rain in their thousands to get a glimpse of the p4p king.

I honestly think that if Floyd was to compete at Wembley in front of 90,000 he would not be booed, even if his opponent was Amir Khan.

The other thing that I find odd is the fact that Manny Pacquiao gets rapturous applause and cheers wherever he goes, I understand that he is a nice guy but come on. If Floyd was to fight Manny at the MGM I guarantee that Manny would be the home favorite in the town where Floyd lives.

Can anyone explain to me why this is?
