Image: Williams vs. Lara: Two flawed fighters go at this SaturdayBy Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night former WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) faces Cuban Erislandy Lara (15-0, 10 KO’s) in a 12 round bout at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It’s incredibly difficult to get excited about this fight because Williams was knocked cold in his last bout in a second round knockout loss to Sergio Martinez last year in November, while his opponent Lara fought to a controversial 10 round majority draw with fringe contender Carlos Molina in March of this year.

We’re talking two flawed guys here. On top of that, Williams is talking about wanting to fight only two more times against Sergio Martinez and Kermit Cintron and then retiring from boxing. That’s not exactly the best thing to say if want boxing fans to see you fight. Why bother if the guy is going to retire soon? I can’t see Williams getting a third fight with Martinez, so that ones probably out. And if he fights Cintron, who cares?

Cintron is fighting Carlos Molina on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California and no one is talking about the fight at all, period. Williams might as well forget the fight and aim for more interesting fights if he’s only going to be fighting two more times. Martinez would knock him out again and it’s not interesting anymore after Williams was knocked out last time.

Williams should go after Saul Alvarez or Alfredo Angulo instead of chasing Martinez or Cintron. He probably won’t have to chase Cintron, but no one will care about this fight. It’ll be like this. Just hardcore boxing fans will be mildly interested in just for the spectacle of it. Will Williams get knocked cold again and will Lara look as limited as he did against Molina? I don’t know and I don’t care.
