Martinez is even willing to fight Mayweather at a slight catch weight but not below 152, which makes it unlikely that the fight can be made.

However, if Mayweather does well against the hard hitting WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz in September, Mayweather may feel confident enough to pencil in Martinez for next year sometime, likely after Mayweather fights and beats Amir Khan.

Fights against Ortiz, Khan and Martinez would earn Mayweather huge respect and huge money in the boxing world and would be a perfect setup for a fight against Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather would likely in the position to call the shots in a fight against Pacquiao. With Pacquiao facing mostly older fighters or ones from his own promoter’s Top Rank stable, Mayweather would be taking the far more exciting fights if he does choose Martinez and Khan in 2012.

Khan has to win his fight against Zab Judah tonight and Martinez has to get by his next opponent Darren Barker on October 1st for these fights to happen for Mayweather, but it would be a huge 2012 if Mayweather were to take those bouts. The topping for all this could be a bout against Pacquiao, as long he’s willing to go along with the program and take the USDA random Olympic style blood tests that Mayweather has been requesting. That doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unfortunately.
