Roach: Khan is really hurting my ribs

By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Freddie Roach is really working up a lather bellyaching about how his fighter WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan is hurting him with body shots through Roach’s body pads while Khan is working out. Roach is talking highly about Khan’s power to the body, making it seem as if Khan is a power puncher instead of a hit and run slapper.

Here is what Roach is saying about Khan’s power shots at the express.co.uk: “I will have to buy a new body bag protection against his punches. Amir is really hurting me, digging me in the ribs, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Oh brother, this is too funny. Look how dramatic Roach is about Khan’s shots. Gee, I wonder if Roach ever thought of hiring a younger guy to do the dirty work like holding pads so that aging Roach can do more important things like give advice while Khan is pounding on a bag. Roach needs to get smart and let some young guy to do menial labor stuff while Roach gives pointers. I don’t think Khan is a big puncher, but I do think Roach is getting up there in age and getting pounded to the body by anyone, even a light puncher, is going to leave you feeling horrible after awhile. Instead of crying about his ribs, Roach needs to hire someone to hold mitts, body bags and whatever else stuff that involves Roach getting tagged. He’s getting up there in age and I think it would be better for his fighters to have a young guy that can move around better than Roach to hold the bags and/or mitts. If I was a fighter, I’d weird about Roach holding the mitts or the bags for me. I’d want to take it easy on him and I think I wouldn’t get much from the training.

Khan faces International Boxing Federation (IBF) light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) on Saturday night in a make or break fight for Khan. If Khan loses the fight, he can forget about getting a big cash out payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr next year. That’s all Khan has been talking about for the past year, and a lot of boxing fans see this as Khan just wanting to get the fight and the payday that comes with it. No one is really giving him any chance against Mayweather, and it would be surprising if even Khan believes he can win. But Judah can take away Khan’s dream fight by knocking him out on Saturday night.
