Klitschko vs. Adamek: Speed is power, says Tomasz

By Dan Ambrose: No.1 ranked WBC/WBO heavyweight contender Tomasz Admek (44-1, 28 KO’s) believes he’s going to beat World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) with his speed instead of his power when they meet up on September 10th at the Stadion Miejski, in Wroclaw, Poland.

“Speed is power,” Adamek said as quoted by fightnews.com from Adamek’s recent press conference with Vitali. “I know what I can do in the ring. I know how to move and what to do win this fight. Most of Vitali’s rivals lost the fight before they enter the ring. It will not happen to me.”

Adamek may know what to do but the question is whether or not he can do it against the big 6’7″ Vitali. Thus far, Adamek has not looked impressive in his last four fights at heavyweight against Kevin McBride, Vinny Maddalone, Michael Grant, and Chris Arreola. In fact, Adamek has only looked good in one fight at heavyweight and that was against 42-year-old Andrew Golota but it’s hard to get worked up about that win because Golota had been stopped in the 1st round his fight before that against Ray Austin.

Adamek basically has picked out a lot of beatable guys and picked up wins the easy way instead of fighting tougher fighters that he might have been in danger against. You got to five him credit for the Arreola fight, but Adamek was staggered in that fight several times against a badly overweight Arreola.

Vitali says it’s going to be a new experience for Adamek when he gets hit by a real heavyweight on September 10th, and he thinks it’s going to be an eye opening experience for Adamek. Vitali could be partially right, but it might be an eye closing experience because if Vitali connects with something big he could knock Adamek out cold.

Adamek’s speed will likely not be a factor in this fight. We’ve seen how little affect speed has when David Haye miserably failed against Wladimir Klitschko in their recent fight. Adamek isn’t nearly as fast and as hard to hit as Haye. Adamek’s speed advantage is very slight in this bout. The only thing that Adamek has an advantage in is his ability to run around the ring, but he still has to come at Vitali when he tries to land. When that happens you can expect Vitali to tag Adamek with jabs, left hooks and right hands to win rounds, and possibly knock him out cold.
