Klitschko-Haye II: Who would pay another £14.95 to watch this?

By Sean McDaniel: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye is saying he’ll retire in October unless IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko fights him again in a rematch. Haye says that he’ll 100% for the next fight and won’t have any physical problems affecting him like his injured toe, which he used an an excuse for not being able to punch the way that he wanted to.

The unfortunate about all this is that their fight wasn’t particularly exciting to watch because of the one-sided nature of it. Haye still thinks fans will want to see the rematch, but will they? Do British boxing fans want to pay another £14.95 to watch it on Sky Pay per view? Haye has already said that he has no plans on fighting one or two tune-up fights against the likes of Chris Arreola and Robert Helenius to earn his way back into another title fight with Wladimir.

The thing is defeated challengers typically aren’t given immediate rematches when they’re beaten as soundly as Haye was by Wladimir. The reason being is because boxing fans have no interest in seeing something again that was so one-sided the first time. This is the reason why fighters like Manny Pacquiao doesn’t turn around and fight defeated opponents Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley over and over again.

Sure, Pacquiao can make good money fighting them again but at a cost of turning off a certain amount of fans. Haye really needs to summon the courage or will power to try at least to earn a second shot against Wladimir. I don’t see fans being willing to pay £14.95 just to watch Wladimir beat him up on the much smaller Haye again without him at least trying to show that he’ll do better in a rematch.
