Khan: I think Bradley should be stripped of his two titles

By William Mackay: Rather than waiting until WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is free and clear to face him, Amir Khan wants Bradley to be stripped now of his two titles so that Khan can fight for the belts against one of the leading contenders in the division.

Khan seems to be totally dialed into getting Bradley’s title no matter what, as if just having the belts will validate Khan as a great fighter. However, it kind of defeats the whole purpose by wanting a guy that has been considered to be the best fighter in the division for the past year to be stripped of his title so that Khan can fight a lesser guy and claim he’s the best.

Khan won’t be considered the best if he fights some overmatched opponent unless it’s someone like Robert Guerrero, Breidis Prescott, Lucas Matthysse or Marcos Maidana.

Khan said this to sporting life.com: “I really think the organizations should strip him [Bradley] of his two titles he has at the moment and maybe vacate them for the next opponent I face, because then at least that gives another fighter the option to fight for a world title.”

It’s like Khan just wants the belts as a meaningless trophy but without the actual accomplishment of having fought and beaten the best fighter in the light welterweight division. What good is winning an empty title if it’s not against the best?

Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Khan, are looking to have the WBC put Erik Morales in with Jorge Barrios for Bradley’s WBC title so that Khan can face the winner of the Morales-Barrios fight. It would be purely a paper title Khan would be fighting for at that point, because Morales was just beaten in his last fight by Marcos Maidana and has no business fighting for a title now.
