Gesta wants fight with Brandon Rios

By Chris Williams: Fringe lightweight contender Mercito Gesta (22-0-1, 12 KO’s) reportedly badly wants a fight against WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (28-0-1, 21 KO’s) is really hoping that Rios will give him a shot. However, Rios rightly do isn’t even slightly interested in wasting time fighting Gesta and I can’t blame him.

Gesta is a complete unknown in the United States among the casual boxing fans, and he’s been looking very, very ordinary in his eight years as pro despite being matched against pretty much C level opposition each time out. This would be a terrible slaughter and hardly worth Rio’s time to fight the slow-handed, slow-footed defensively poor Gesta.

I’ve seen a number of Gesta’s fights and his movements are like someone caught in a huge sheet of flypaper and god his hand speed just terrible. He punch, but so what. His hand speed is just too slow. Gesta needs to fight his way into a title shot like Rios did to get his fight. If Gesta wants a fight against Rios, he needs to take on and beat guys like Anthony Peterson, Miguel Acosta, Jorge Luis Teron and Urbano Antillon.

I see Gesta losing to all of those fighters. He’s just too slow. I like the way that he’s being hyped as if he’s the real deal, but I don’t any talent there other than a little power. It’s going to be a sad day when Gesta finally steps it up against a B level fighter and gets exposed. I’m not even talking A level, because he’ll clearly lose to them. I’m talking B level. That would be a huge step up for for Gesta and I see him failing. But to have Gesta go from the C level guys he’s been facing to getting a title shot against Rios wouldn’t be right. Gesta has to earn the shot.
