Chavez Jr will be on his own without Roach and Ariza for 9/24 fight

By Dan Ambrose: If unbeaten WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fights on September 24th it will be without the assistance of trainer Freddie Roach and strength coach Alex Ariza, who will be busy training the number #1 cash cow for Top Rank Promotions WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao for his November 12th fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Bob Arum of Top Rank said this to ringtv.craveonline.com about Chavez Jr fighting on September 24th: “We believe it’s ill advised due to Freddie’s involvement with Manny Pacquiao. Freddie’s not going to have time to train Chavez because we think Freddie’s going to be busy and that by then Freddie’s going to be in Baguio.”

Chavez probably won’t need either Roach or Ariza for the September 24th bout because he’s looking to be facing either David Medina (23-2, 11 KO’s) or Nobuhiro Ishida (23-6-2, 8 KO’s) as the main guys that Chavez Jr will be picking from. Brian Vera and Ronald Hearns were previously mentioned as possible opponents but Vera has a fight in October against Andy Lee and Hearns is still reportedly injured and can’t take the fight. It’s doubtful that Chavez will fight Ishida because he looked pretty good recently in destroying James Kirkland in a 1st round blowout in April, and that might make Ishida unappealing to Chavez’s management.

They want someone that Chavez Jr can get a guaranteed win against and you can’t say for sure that Chavez could beat someone like Ishida. This leaves only the 32-year-old Medina. He has a decent looking record but he’s never fought anyone good that he actually beat. He’s been stopped twice in his career despite being carefully matched.

Chavez Jr plans on fighting against on November 19th in another easy money fight, this time against Peter Manfredo Jr. As you can see, Chavez Jr is in no hurry to step it up and start facing live bodies after beating paper champion Sebastian Zbik for the World Boxing Council title on June 4th. Boxing fans want to see Chavez Jr face Sergio Martinez or Marco Antonio Rubio but Chavez Jr and his management are in no hurry of facing either of those guys if ever.
