Adamek vs. Klitschko: Tomasz may end up running as much as Haye did

By Dan Ambrose: In taking a look at some of the opponents that heavyweight challenger Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) has faced since he moved up to the heavyweight division and noting how he chose to fight them by using a lot of movement, I would frankly not be surprised in the least if Adamek looks as bad against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) as former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye looked in losing to IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko this past weekend.

Adamek is on the small side as a heavyweight and has been matched against mostly older heavyweights in the same way that Haye had been matched against exclusively older fighters after moving up in weight. Adamek, 6’2” 215 lbs, will be giving away five inches in height to the 6’7” Vitali and 30 pounds in weight.

It’s going to be almost identical to the size mismatch between Wladimir and Haye, only that Adamek won’t have the fast hands or the big power that Haye had going for him. Adamek used to be a big puncher at light heavyweight and cruiserweight, but when he moved up in weight to the heavyweight division his power didn’t come along with him.

Adamek has feasted on older fighters like Michael Grant, 38, Kevin McBride, 38, Vinny Maddalone, 36, and Andrew Golota, 42. The only young fighters that Adamek has faced have been Jason Estrada and Chris Arreola, and Adamek didn’t look very special in beating either of those guys.

Adamek will have the home town advantage in this fight, as he’s from Poland. However, it won’t matter any, because he’s not going to make it to the final bell unless he fights purely defensively and doesn’t try to win the fight. If he plays it safe, Adamek will be able to run his way to a lopsided 12 round decision loss. But if he tries to go after Vitali with his hit and run style of fighting, Vitai will time him and destroy him within four or five rounds.

Knowing Adamek, he’ll decide to play it safe and fight to survive rather than risk being knocked out in front of all of his fans in Poland.
