Image: Maidana vs. Guerrero on August 6th a possibilityBy Dan Ambrose: WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (30-1, 27 KO’s) could be facing Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) on August 6th at the Shark Tank in San Jose, CA, according to Steve Kim. Maidana has been in search of an opponent for quite some time and he had been hoping to get a fight against WBA light welterweight champ Amir Khan.

However, Khan selected Zab Judah to fight next. Maidana and Guerrero both fight for Golden Boy Promotions, making this fight an easy one to put together. It’s a good fight for Guerrero, because he would have an excellent chance of winning a decision over the much slower Maidana. There is next to no chance that Guerrero could stop Maidana, and it’s doubtful that Maidana will be able to take Guerrero out because he won’t be standing in front of him all night long or trying to trade on the inside.

This is a bad fight for Maidana. It would basically come down to whether he can take Guerrero out. If he couldn’t, he’ll probably lose, especially with it taking place in Guerrero’s hometown. Technically, Guerrero is from Gilroy, CA, but that city is right next door to San Jose, making this a home fight for Guerrero. Since Maidana is the more popular fighter, I think he would be crazy to take this fight. It’s not a good for him and one where he would probably have to score a knockout to win. If Maidana loses to Guerrero, then Maidana can forget about ever getting a rematch with Khan. We saw what’s happened to Breidis Prescott. Two losses since the Khan fight, and that gives Khan all the excuses he needs to avoid fighting Prescott again.
